New 2010 Race in Highland/Poughkeepsie

Plan ahead for June 12, 2010. This is a very cool 5K race that will be held on the new walkway they built on the train bridge just North of the Mid-Hudson bridge between Poughkeepsie and my home town of Highland. This is about 1:10 North of New City driving up 9W.

NYRR Joe Kleinerman 10K, December 6, 2009

Team RRR closed out the 2009 racing season with a fantastic showing in Central Park today. We had 33 finishers on a cold, crisp December morning. Special congratulations to the Men's 60+ team who look to have sewn up the 2nd place team trophy for 2009. We also had some very strong individual performances, with many trophy winners, including AG wins for Marie Killeen and Gerald Burstein.

Thanks to everyone who has supported the team throughout 2009. I will post the final 2009 team results after NYRR tallies them, but we are in position to make some major improvements this year. We look forward to an even better 2010. Stay tuned for the 2010 NYRR team points schedule in a couple of weeks.

Help Wanted: Bandit Wranglers

We just received this note from RRR member Jim Mastrangelo.

Want to Volunteer as a Bandit Catcher for Sunday's NYC Marathon?

Here's what we do...

When the runners come into Central Park at Columbus Circle on their last 1/2 mile of the race we check to see that everyone has a legitimate race number. As anyone who has run the race before knows, you have worked damn hard for the medal you are given once you cross the finish line.

We make sure that those who jump in somewhere on the course (usually the last 3 miles) don't get the recognition and medal as those who earned it.

Last year we pulled off the course over 200 "bandits" i.e. those who are trying to steal a medal. We need men and women to track down the bad guys. It is really fun being on the course not only keeping the "dishonest" racers off, but being there to lend a strong side by side support to those struggling the last few paces.

We have one of our RRRs at the 26 mile mark as the last "catcher" before the finish line and he always needs some help.

It's important, fun and it gets you as close to the finish line action as you can get if your not in the race itself. Also a final big PLUS: you can get right up close to the root on the Rockland Road Runners gals and guys finishing the race.

We meet about 11 to Noon on race day around Columbus Circle but you will need credentials to get on the course so if anyone is interested call Jim Mastrangelo @ 973-962-4545 for more information.

ING NYC Marathon Information

Here are excerpts from the recent NYRR club council meeting notes.

Please urge your club members who plan to visit the ING New York City Marathon Health and Fitness Expo to do so on Thursday, October 29, if at all possible. The expo will be very crowded with out-of-town runners on Friday, October 30, and (especially) Saturday, October 31. Visiting on Thursday will allow local runners to avoid the crowds and should alleviate some of the crowding. Expo info: http://www.ingnycmarathon.org/expo.htm.

Local Competitive Program - Eligible runners from Team RRR have been notified.
Email has been sent out to all who have qualified to be in this program. If you log in to the marathon site, you will notice that your number has been updated to a new number between 500 - 900.

The Local Competitive Program is designed to give a preferred starting position to those who meet a time standard based on gender and age. Your starting position will be at the front of the green start, Wave 1. This start is at 9:40am.

Your UPS Baggage truck will be the very first truck in a long line of UPS trucks. CLICK HERE FOR A START MAP.
Look for the UPS truck that has a green sign .
Keep in mind that your baggage truck is approximately ¼ mile away from the Local Competitive staging area. Please allow yourself enough time to check your bag and get back to your staging area before your group is moved to the start line.

Timeline:
6:00 am – Baggage Opens
8:30 am – Suggested baggage check
9:05 am – Wave 1 corrals close. Local Competitive athletes move onto the bridge, ahead of the general green start runners. If you are not in the Local Competitive staging area at this time, you will not be allowed the preferred starting position.
9:40 am – Wave 1 starts

Amenities
Amenities in this staging area will include:
Toilets
Bottled Water
Bagels
Gatorade
Powerbar
Please note that there will be limited quantities available. First come, first serve.

Course/Scoring
After mile 13 there will be mile splits at every mile (taken by Chronotrack.)

Course changes - There are SEVERAL changes on the course. Please forward this to anyone who is running the marathon this year:
Team RRR note: There are minor course changes because of construction projects and other issues. You will not need to worry about any of this unless you are out in front of the field. The most noticable changes will be:
- Some re-routing at the 8 mi mark merge
- Half marathon mark will now be before the bridge
- sharp turns (mostly in Queens) will be reduced

NYRR Team Championship Bus Information

The team bus to the NYRR Team Championship race in Central Park will be leaving at 7:15AM on Saturday, August 8, from the Commuter Parking Lot in the Palisades Mall (near Home Depot). We will bring some food and drinks and setup a tent in the Park near the Start/Finish area (near E 102nd St entrance, inside park) so the group can meet up.

If anyone else wants to join us on the bus, please send a note to TeamRRR@RocklandRoadRunners.org

The Mens race is at 9AM. The Women go at 10AM. There is still time to register with NYRR. You must have done one other NYRR race this year for the team (RRR) to qualify to run in this championship race.

Masters Challenge Race Results

The Masters Challenge 3mi XC race for 40+ year old members of Taconic Road Runners, Westchester Track Club, Rockland Road Runners, Wolfpit, and South Shore did take place on Wednesday July 29 despite the horrendous weather all day. The thunderstorms gave us a brief respite so we could get in a wet and muddy race at 7PM around the Manhattanville College campus in Purchase, NY.

Unfortunately, the violent weather during the day kept the turnout very low. RRR was not able to field enough runners to score as a team (10 runners required for Men 40+, and 5 runners required for the other categories)
Thank you to the hearty souls who did make it. Team RRR finishers were: Ann Mitlof, Jamie Kempton, Logan Scott, Wojciech Cieszkowski (VT), Jerry Sun, Roy Altman, Dan Mitlof, and Ed Brown.

Full Results are posted here. Although we did not score as a team, we did have some impressive placing, including: 3rd, 4th, 7th, 9th, 12th, 15th, plus Ann as 8th woman.

Our thanks to the hosts, the Taconic Road Runners and Manhattanville College, who put on another fun event with great microbrew beer and food for the soggy runners after the race.

Team RRR 2009 Mid-Year Review

This entry is also published in the RRR newsletter.

The Rockland Road Runners have sped off to a fast start in the 2009 racing season. We have had very large turnouts at the New York Road Runner races with many individual award winners and competitive team finishes. We also won the Interclub Challenge race in March.

A key focus for Team RRR is the New York Road Runners Team Championship Series. NYRR hosts a competition for all of the NY metro area running clubs. NYRR picks a series of eleven races from their calendar (see list below) that are designated to score points in a year-long team competition between the dozens of local running clubs.

Team RRR has had as many as 44 participants in a single race, which rivals the presence of even the largest NYC racing teams. As a team, we want to promote broad participation and encourage runners of all abilities to join us in the NYRR races.

With that large participation also comes strong team results. The “Swifty Sixty’s” 60+ Men’s team is currently in second place, and the 60+ Ladies are in fourth, hungry to move up into trophy position. We are also in the top 10 with the Men’s 40+ team, at #8 of 62 teams, and the Women’s 50+ team, who are #7 of 22 teams. Our Women’s 40+, Men’s 50+ and Open teams are also competitive and in position to do great in the standings.

Team RRR has had some stellar individual performances in the NYRR team points races. Sheila Casey won the F35-39 age group twice. Narcis Aron (M60-64) and Alexandra Finger (F70-74) have both won their age groups. Josephine Patten (F50-54) has been a consistent star on the NYC scene with two second place and two third place finishes. Marie “Grandma” Killeen (F70-74) has placed second twice. Gerald Burstein (M70-74) has placed second and third. Other award winners in the team points races include: Frank Nieves (#3, M60-64) and Alexandra Finger (#3, F70-74). Considering that close to 8,000 runners have been in the races, these results are really fantastic!

We have had many additional age group award winners in the other NYRR races on the calendar. Keep up with all the results on this Team RRR Race Results Blog.

The fun is just getting started. The meat of the racing season is still to come. We would appreciate your continued support to keep building up our presence in NYC. The first race of the second half of the year is the CPC Run for Central Park 4 miler on July 18. The big event is the NYRR Team Championship race on Saturday, August 8, in Central Park. They open up the scoring to more people in the championship race and the points count double. Team RRR will charter a bus to get you to this race in comfort and style, and we will have a team picnic in Central Park right after the race. Please join us!

In addition to the fun, camaraderie, and competition, Team RRR has other benefits. We have an incentive program where we award prizes based on the number of races you compete in during the year. We have a coveted “runner of the year” award for the ladies and men. We are also planning for a Team RRR dinner near the end of the year (details to follow).

Join the fun by simply choosing “Rockland RR – RRR” as your designated team when you register for the races with NYRR (http://www.nyrr.org).

The team captains would like to thank everyone for the fantastic level of participation so far this year. Let’s build on the momentum and fill up Central Park with Rockland racers in the second half of the year.

For more information on the racing team, go to the “Team RRR” page on the website, http://www.rocklandroadrunners.org/ , or send an email to TeamRRR@RocklandRoadRunners.org

Gentlemen, get ready for the next NYRR team points race on Father's Day

The ladies had a great race yesterday, now it is the men's turn. The next NYRR team points race is the Father's Day 5miler on June 21. This event is open to all, but only Men will score points for the NYRR team points competition.

Make plans to start your Father's Day with this fun race.

The RRR Men's teams are very competitive this year. We need as many guys to show up as possible to boost our standings.

NYRR Team Points Competition

Team RRR is climbing the rankings in many team categories this year. Track the overall team points competition here on the NYRR website.

The next NYRR team points race is the Mini 10K on June 7. This is a Women only event.

The next one for the men is the Father's Day 5miler on June 21. This event is open to all, but only Men will score points for the NYRR team points competition.

Looking out ahead for the summer, the CPC Run for Central Park 4 miler is a team points race on July 18. The BIG ONE is the NYRR Team Championship race on August 8 in Central Park. This 5mile race scores double points and is exclusive to the local running teams. Plan your summer vacation so you don't miss this energizing race. A good time is guaranteed (aside from the oxygen debt). Team RRR will have a bus going down to the team championship event. Stay tuned for details.

All runners of all abilities are welcome and encouraged to join this and all of our Team RRR races.

RRR Marisa 10K, May 17, 2009

The results for the Rockland Road Runner's Marisa 10K race, held at Rockland Lake State Park, are posted on the results page of the race's website.

The race had a great turn-out. Spread the word for next year as this is a flat and fast 10K race for an excellent cause.
